of the perilous journey across the English Channel and tried to help as best he could to ease that awesome burden. It was an
equally awesome burden for General Ike as he knew so many of his men may never

Airborne Paratroopers beside their C-47 transport plane on the eve the D-Day invasion. Before the sun set on Normandy Beaches on D-Day only four men were still alive of the nineteen that parachuted onto hostile German held French land. (National Archives Photo) |
A few days before the 1994 Commemoration of D-Day the people of
France and Belgium had 4,410 of their school children gather at the St. James
military cemetery in Normandy. Each was to sit in front of
one cross. Each had an American flag, a small white flower and a small white box. At a given moment each
was instructed to open the box. Out flew a homing pigeon that headed for the British
shores - - symbolic of the souls of the fallen warriors returning to their
home base. This writer was not there but I am sure there wasn’t a dry eye that could be seen anywhere close
by this cemetery. (A-P Photo)
